An old pond,

Frogs call out,

Never to be found

After visiting Hanamiyama, we made our way to Nihonmatsu.

First, we visited Kasumigajo Park. The park is located roughly a 15 minute walk away from the station(even faster by bike), you just have to be prepared for some steep roads.

Nihonmatsu Castle(also known as Kasumigajo) is one of Japan's famous 100 castles. The remains of the castle is surrounded by a park, and one can enjoy the historic atmosphere, along with the beautiful nature.

Nihonmatsu Castle Shounentai

Speaking of history, while Aizu is famous for the 'White Tiger Force', Nihonmatsu actually had it's own similar group. The Nihonmatsu Shonentai, was a group of 12 to 17 year old boys who participated in the Boshin war, which resulted the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The death of many of the Nihonmatsu Shonentai members is known as one of the tragedies of the Boshin war.

Sakura Sakura-2

Speaking of nature, the park surrounded by Nihonmatsu Castle has also been selected as one of the top 100 cherry blossom areas. Walking the park their were cherry blossom trees in full bloom spread all over the park. It was just as beautiful as Hanamiyama.

Lake Sign

While walking the park we came across a small  waterfall and lake. When coming closer we heard the call of several frogs. I had a good look for them, but came away with little luck.

It's said that the Frogs' calls signal the coming of spring. I'm determined to make the most of my first spring here in Fukushima.
