02:Tomato Land Iwaki

After our visit to the Agricultural Centre, we headed to Tomato Land Iwaki.

The facility was built based on Dutch technology, as the Netherlands is known for its agricultural technology. The total area of the greenhouses is 23, 664 square kilometres.

Dodging the occasional bee (they help with pollination), we were guided through a massive green house, lined with tomato plants.

While the facility suffered minor structural damage due to the earthquake, and a drop in sales to due harmful rumours about radiation levels, they managed to rebuild, and restart operations again relatively quickly. Through focusing on sales through the internet, and farmer’s markets, they have not only regained sales to pre-disaster levels, but they are now actually selling even more than they were before the disaster occurred.

After hearing the explanation of the facility we were let loose upon the tomatoes, free to pick and eat them to our hearts content.

Big thanks to the staff for guiding us around the facility!
