Dear Friends:

Initially, many people expressed concern upon discovering that I would be living and working in Fukushima.  This fall, I attended a study tour in the Aizu area and learned how Fukushima was affected by the disaster and the resilience of its people to overcome their difficulties.  One message I’d like to send to the U.S. is that Fukushima’s reputation rests on its people and their efforts, not by what happened to them.  I have traveled all over, but Fukushima is unique in that its inhabitants are genuinely excited to welcome foreigners and teach others about their home prefecture.  My experience in Fukushima is the perfect embodiment of the term “omotenashi,” which many foreigners know now because of the Olympic games.  I’m confident that if you take the time to visit Fukushima, you will experience the kindness and welcoming spirit of Fukushima for yourself!

Thank you.
