In August 2014 I came to Japan to live and work in Hirono, a small town on the coast of Fukushima Prefecture. My friends and family were initially concerned when I told them I was going to come here. So it’s wonderful that I can tell them that Fukushima is such a positive and optimistic place, and about the incredible progress it has made over the past three years.

Last month I visited Aizu, the western part of the prefecture, where I met with local people to learn about the effects of the earthquake across the region. I met people displaced by the earthquake and was amazed by the optimism and energy they had shown in starting new businesses and rebuilding their communities. Three years on from the earthquake, Fukushima is finally beginning to thrive once more. I hope that one day you will visit and see it for yourself!
