Two years ago, I came to Japan for the first time, as a volunteer (university student) to Fukushima. I had an unforgettable experience traveling around the area for a week, during which I enjoyed the beautiful scenery and delicious food, and also meeting and talking with many people. The thing I remember the most is the elderly folk waving goodbye to us as we left. I was very moved by their energy and positivity. Looking back I have nothing but feelings of gratitude towards them. Whenever I see the Akabeko, I remember those summer days I spent in Fukushima. Thank you Fukushima! , this is my message to you.

I am currently an exchange student studying in graduate school at a university in Japan. After almost a year had passed since I came to Japan, I had been thinking that I really wanted to visit Fukushima again while I was still in Japan. Luckily I was able to act on this thought relatively quickly. I enjoy experiencing different cultures, and I never pass up the chance to try delicious food. I had heard that Fukushima was famous for peaches before, but unfortunately as it was June they weren’t in season. Instead we went cherry picking, and after 30 minutes of all you can eat, I was very satisfied. Something else that surprised me in Oku-Aizu was a place where you could drink as much natural carbonated water as you wanted. I use a lot of energy and 3 meals a day isn’t enough for me so we went fishing at a stream. I had never fished before, but I managed to beat my friend in a contest, and was really pleased. I started having fantasies about becoming a professional fisherman, and finding stardom. The freshwater fish I caught tasted great. If you have the chance, please come and visit Fukushima!
